Ok, I'm back, but I'm sleepy. No of corsue we don't follow the norm. I have never celebrated Halloween with either of my children. The oldest is almost 14. Yes, they have asked about it. My oldest was a rebel. I asked her "Do you know what WWJD is?" She sort of knew. I asked her if she thought Jesus would dress up as some little ghost or goblin if he lived in our society as a child during Halloween. The answer was No. I know, I know, everyone isn't going to be a ghost or a goblin. Before people celebrate things do they ever get the history behind it? Halloween is a day that is ultimately dedicated to being something demonic once a year and sending your children to get candy from willing strangers. All this we used to do and they told us "Never take candy from strangers" So the strangers that was giving candy to kids for bad purposes do they just happen to disappear because it's Halloween? No. They just made us have to come home and check our apples for razor blades and see weather anyone poisoned the candy. They called it "checking" the candy....that's just ridiculous. I have had teachers become EXTREMELY offended because we choose to not even acknowledge this "holiday" (holy day) Halloween holy day...just doesn't click. Why is it in our public schools they can celebrate a "holiday" that has been dedicated to witches, tricks, and warlocks but can't celebrate the Christmas theme of Jesus Christ? Yeah, they celebrate Christmas, but in a very secular way--having absolutely nothing to do with Christ...which is ok with me since He wasn't even born on Dec. 25th anyway. There is a big difference with Christmas for our family. In our family Christmas is the biggest event and tradition of the year. I have fond memories as a child. I want my children to have fond memories. In our home, (not mom's) we didn't even have to have a tree. The season is just beautiful. I actually see people who you would never suspect have feelings smile or give during this special time. Yes, there's the shopping and don't get me wrong. I do my share of that too. But it's so much more than that. There's movies that bring back memories, there's baking, the house is filled with the Christmas smell of food. We love to see someone's face light up as they unwrap the gift we carefully picked out. It is so satisfying to know that I've made someone smile.

My children don't have a close renioitlshap. I would love for them to. My oldest has a communication diagnosis. She was very comfortable not socializing. My youngest is so fun-loving. She is very affectionate and this is very bothersome to the older one. I do my best to encourage the oldest to be more aware of her little sister's sensitivity. For instance, a couple of nights ago there were several gunshots fired in our neighborhood. Now, we do hear maybe one or two shots once or twice a year but nothing in close range. This was extremely close range. My youngest cried her eyes out. After the initial shock of it all my oldest continued to get ready for school the next day. She did not discuss it. She did not stand and wonder. She simply resumed business as usual once I declared to them they could go ahead and shower and get in bed. The youngest sniffled and so on. I didn't give much attention to it because I couldn't tell if she was vying for attention or whether she was REALLY scared. I imagined a little of both. I let her sniffle. Eventually she addressed my ignoring her. The oldest comes out of the shower, goes into her room briefly--I hear chattering of sorts. She then comes and stands in my doorway very irritated that the youngest was crying."Mom she's crying" with hardly any emotion. I made her go be more attentive even though I suspected a bit of exaggeration. She did and later I heard laughter from both girls. I was happy. I would love to have seen how my girls would've interacted with one another like Dania and Ramya, but God had another plan for me. Having a child with special needs is stressful, frustrating but so humbling and I find myself learning something from this 13 year old nearly everyday. I teach her and she teaches me. Even though the situation is not ideal, I too love watching them and hearing their voices and seeing how they overcome obstacles. My oldest has come a long way and I pray for the day when she completely overcomes this social/sensitivity obstacle.
